If the timing of this year’s Critics Choice Awards strikes you as odd, you’re right: Most major awards shows are held on Sunday evenings. But after two postponements because of the Los Angeles wildfires, the ceremony finally came to rest on a Friday last month.

Despite the rescheduling, the main details held firm: Chelsea Handler hosted the event as planned in Santa Monica, California, with many of the year’s biggest stars of film and television in attendance. But, in what may be a sign of the organisers’ downsized ambitions for the show, a planned two-hour special of red carpet coverage before the ceremony was scrapped with the most recent rescheduling albeit celebrating the best in film and television from the last year.

So, with films like Anora, The Brutalist, Conclave, The Substance, and the embattled Emilia Pérez up for major prizes (as well as worthy projects such as Hard Truths, Heretic, and Challengers that were blanked by the Academy), how did it all shake out? And what about fan-favourite series like Baby Reindeer or Shôgun – both big winners at the recent Golden Globes – and the slightly nicher (but no less beloved) Industry and Slow Horses?
