Overly Trendy

It’s arguable that the oversized trend has circled round a few times over past years, but there’s something about this time that has the runways captivated. We don’t remember a time before where a garment has been specifically marketed as “oversized” - usually it’s just been looking out for things in a few sizes too big and hoping for the best. And it was more the mark of rebellion rather than a fashion statement.

This time round, the big influence over the trend was Covid lockdown. There were designers producing voluminous silhouettes before lockdown hit but the change to life mostly at home in loose, comfortable clothes kicked the movement into overdrive. Now, four or so years later, it’s a shift that can’t be shaken. It is the case that moments of social, cultural and political upheaval often lead to profound developments in fashion and there is no question that the pandemic had a widespread impact on the adoption of oversized fits and styles.

It changed something of the relationship between our bodies and the clothes we surround them with. Finally for some, a style that is universal and all-embracing, where body shape and size doesn’t matter.

So why is the oversized trend so popular?
Comfort: Oversized clothes are, yes, comfy! They offer a relaxed fit that doesn't restrict movement, perfect for lounging or whatever you might be doing with your days.

Versatility: Oversized garments can be styled in so many different ways. Dress them up with heels and accessories, or keep it casual with trainers and a basic top.

Self-Expression: Oversized fashion is a way to break free from traditional, form-fitting styles and express your individuality, making it feel unique and personal for some.

Body Positivity: The trend embraces a wider range of body shapes and sizes, arguably promoting a more all-inclusive approach to fashion.

Effortless Cool Vibes: Oversized clothes often have a cool, effortless vibe. They can make you look put-together without trying too hard.
