Kate Winslet's daughter to star in latest Cannes film ‘The Phoenician Scheme’

Mia Threapleton is stepping into the global spotlight as the lead in Wes Anderson’s new film The Phoenician Scheme, premiering at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The 24-year-old British actress, best known for her television work in The Buccaneers, takes on the role of Sister Liesl, marking her highest-profile role to date.

Directed by Anderson and set in Europe, the film features a cast of returning collaborators and new faces, including Benicio del Toro, Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson, and Bryan Cranston. Threapleton plays a headstrong daughter caught in a caper involving her estranged father, an eccentric land scheme, and a string of near-fatal events. Threapleton’s casting signals a potential breakout moment, though audiences may already recognise her surname - she is the daughter of Oscar-winner Kate Winslet.

Threapleton recently worked alongside her mother in I Am Ruth, a drama that earned Winslet a BAFTA. The Phoenician Scheme debuts at Cannes this month along with theatrical release on May 30.
