A New Chapter in Bilateral Relations Jam Kamal Federal Minister of Commerce.
In a significant diplomatic and commercial outreach, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal, has reiterated the country’s strong commitment to bolstering economic ties with Japan. Addressing a high-profile business event at the Pakistani Embassy in Tokyo, Minister Kamal emphasized the strategic importance of fostering bilateral trade and investment between the two nations. The event, orchestrated by the Embassy’s Commercial Counselor Madeeha Ali in collaboration with other diplomatic officials, attracted a prestigious gathering of Japanese political and business leaders, as well as influential members of the Pakistani business community based in Japan.
Bridging the Trade Gap
While speaking to the audience, Minister Kamal candidly acknowledged that the existing trade volume between Pakistan and Japan is significantly below its potential. The trade balance, which currently favors Japan, is an area of concern for Pakistan. However, Kamal assured that efforts are actively underway to correct this imbalance through increased market access for Pakistani products and the promotion of mutual investment opportunities.
“We are not just looking at numbers; we are looking at a relationship that should reflect the mutual strengths and opportunities of our two nations,” the minister said, highlighting that Japan is one of the most technologically advanced and economically powerful nations in the world, and that Pakistan can serve as a valuable partner in regional trade dynamics.
A Gathering of Influential Business Leaders
The event served as a platform for collaboration, attracting notable Pakistani business figures who have been instrumental in strengthening commercial ties between Pakistan and Japan. Among the attendees were Chaudhry Asif Mahmood, Malik Younus, Asad Khan, Sikandar Pasia, Shehzad Butt, Shahid Majeed, and Waheed Khan – individuals who have consistently championed Pakistan’s economic interests abroad. Their presence underscored the critical role of the overseas business community in promoting Pakistan’s trade agenda on the global stage.
The Minister praised these entrepreneurs for their dedication and contributions, stating, “You are the face of Pakistan in Japan, and your efforts have laid the foundation for a more prosperous and interconnected future between our two countries.”
Promoting Trade Through Cultural and Commercial Events
Minister Kamal pointed to the growing success of Pakistan’s participation in international platforms such as Expo 2025 Osaka. He revealed that the Pakistani pavilion has garnered significant attention and appreciation from Japanese visitors, showcasing not only the country’s cultural richness but also its economic and commercial offerings.
“The enthusiastic response to our pavilion is an indicator of Japan’s increasing interest in Pakistani products, craftsmanship, and innovation,” Kamal remarked. “Events like Expo 2025 provide a golden opportunity to reshape perceptions and introduce the true potential of Pakistani industries to the world.”
Investment Opportunities in Pakistan
During his address, the Minister made a direct appeal to Japanese investors, inviting them to explore Pakistan’s promising investment landscape. He highlighted key sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture, information technology, and infrastructure development, describing them as ripe for foreign investment.
He also cited the Government of Pakistan’s recent initiatives aimed at making the investment climate more conducive. A special investment facilitation cell, formed under the directive of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has been tasked with addressing and resolving issues faced by foreign investors. “This is a reflection of our seriousness and commitment to welcoming and supporting foreign investment,” the Minister said.
He reassured potential investors that Pakistan is moving toward greater economic stability and reform, driven by a vision of regional connectivity, sustainable development, and technological advancement.
Overseas Pakistanis: The Economic Pillars
In an exclusive interview with Daily Jang, Minister Kamal shifted focus to the invaluable contributions of the overseas Pakistani community. He described overseas Pakistanis as the “backbone” of the country’s economy, lauding their resilience and commitment.
“They are our national asset. Their remittances – over $38 billion annually – are essential to Pakistan’s economic stability and growth,” he emphasized. “The government acknowledges their efforts and is introducing targeted policies and incentives in the upcoming federal budget to facilitate them further.”
The Minister stressed that these initiatives are designed not only to reward the financial contributions of overseas Pakistanis but also to encourage deeper engagement in national development. These provisions are expected to include streamlined investment channels, tax reliefs, and support services for returning expatriates.
Informal Ambassadors of the Nation
Minister Kamal also commended the proactive role played by overseas Pakistanis in advocating for the country during international diplomatic tensions, particularly in the context of the recent friction with India. “They have acted as informal ambassadors, defending our national stance and promoting a positive image of Pakistan abroad,” he said. “Their role in public diplomacy cannot be overstated.”
