Overseas Pakistanis’ Passion, Learning from Japanese Experience, and a New Dimension in Bilateral Ties.
A Grand Reception and Emotional Scenes
When Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif arrived in Tokyo on her much-anticipated official visit, she was welcomed with extraordinary warmth and enthusiasm. At a renowned five-star hotel in the city, well before her arrival, a large number of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) members, overseas chapter leaders, and representatives of the Pakistani community had gathered to receive her.
As soon as Maryam Nawaz entered the hotel hall, the atmosphere erupted with chants of “Maryam Nawaz Zindabad” (Long Live Maryam Nawaz) and “Nawaz Sharif, move forward, we are with you.” Green crescent-and-star flags waved high, welcome banners and placards adorned the venue, and the entire scene transformed into one of festivity. Smiling faces, passionate slogans, and floral garlands symbolized the depth of affection and loyalty felt by the community.
Unity of Party Leadership and Overseas Chapter
The reception was attended by the central leadership of PML-N Japan. Notable figures included former International Affairs General Secretary Sheikh Qaiser Mahmood, PML-N Japan President Malik Noor Awan, Chairman Malik Younas, General Secretary Shams Butt, Senior Vice President Qadeer Mughal, Chaudhry Ansar, Information Secretary Malik Kashif Awan, and senior leader Nasir Gujjar. Alongside them were Abrar Shah, Waseem Kamboh, Shahid Majeed, Atif Butt, Abdul Sattar, and several other dedicated workers.
Their collective presence reflected the unity, commitment, and organizational strength of PML-N’s overseas network. Party leaders in their remarks emphasized that Maryam Nawaz’s arrival had infused new energy into overseas members, asserting that her leadership represents not only a new political vision but also renewed hope for Pakistan’s progress.
Overseas Pakistanis’ Hopes and Aspirations
Speakers at the event underlined that Maryam Nawaz’s visit would not only strengthen bilateral ties between Pakistan and Japan but also bring attention to the problems faced by overseas Pakistanis. According to them, her politics is rooted in service, transparency, and people’s welfare, and she has always taken a deep interest in issues affecting the diaspora.
Particularly notable was the presence of Raja Amir Iqbal, President of PML-N South Korea, who had traveled especially to Japan. Speaking to the media, he remarked:
“Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s visit is a beacon of hope for overseas Pakistanis. She has always shown genuine concern for expatriates’ issues, and this trip will also open new doors for investment and bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and Japan.”
A Determination to Learn from Japan’s Experience
One of the most significant aspects of the visit was Maryam Nawaz’s decision to benefit from Japan’s advanced environmental and urban development models. She paid a special visit to Yokohama, Japan’s commercial, economic, and cultural hub, where she was given a detailed briefing on urban development at the city’s Town Hall.
During this visit, both sides agreed on a “city-to-city” cooperation framework between Yokohama and Punjab in the fields of environmental protection, modern infrastructure, and sustainable urban facilities. Maryam Nawaz stressed the importance of raising the standards of roads and building construction in Punjab to match Japanese quality.
Major Projects Under Consideration
The meetings also included discussions on possible cooperation between the Ravi Urban Development Authority and Yokohama. There was further deliberation on launching a high-speed rail project between Lahore and Islamabad and upgrading Pakistan’s railway system with Japanese support.
Maryam Nawaz also reviewed modern Japanese chairlift and air-cabin projects, expressing her desire to introduce similar models in Punjab’s tourist regions. Such initiatives would not only provide modern transport facilities but also boost the tourism industry.
A New Chapter in Pakistan-Japan Relations
This visit was not merely ceremonial; it was a milestone in strengthening Pakistan-Japan relations. Japan, being a major economic power in Asia, can serve as an important partner for Pakistan in the fields of investment, technology transfer, and environmental solutions.
Maryam Nawaz, in her statements, made it clear that Punjab wishes to extend its friendship with Japan beyond diplomatic gestures and deepen it in economic, social, and cultural domains. According to her, Japan’s technological advancement and administrative models can guide Pakistan in transforming its urban landscape.
A Political and Symbolic Milestone
Maryam Nawaz’s visit to Japan carried symbolic weight beyond its official dimension. It sent a message that PML-N is working to strengthen its ties with Pakistani communities worldwide and that their concerns are being placed at the forefront of national priorities.
On the other hand, the visit also opened up new avenues in Pakistan-Japan relations. From environmental cooperation and urban development to railway upgrades and tourism projects, the partnership can have lasting benefits not only for Punjab but for Pakistan as a whole.
