Martin Scorsese has officially chosen his next project, and it is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films of 2026. The legendary director will helm What Happens at Night, an adaptation of Peter Cameron’s haunting novel, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence set as the leads.
The project brings together three Oscar winners at the top of their craft. Scorsese reunites with DiCaprio after a string of collaborations that includes The Aviator, The Wolf of Wall Street and Shutter Island. Lawrence, meanwhile, joins the director for the first time, bringing fresh energy to his oeuvre after earning acclaim in Die, My Love, which premiered at Cannes earlier this year.
Based on Cameron’s novel, the story follows an American couple who travel to a remote, snowbound European town to adopt a baby. Staying at a vast, nearly empty hotel, they encounter a bizarre cast of characters including a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman and a charismatic faith healer. As their world unravels, reality and illusion blur, echoing the disorienting tone of Shutter Island.
