Heat 2, the long-awaited follow-up to Michael Mann’s 1995 crime classic, is still alive – and Leonardo DiCaprio may be in the mix. While Warner Bros hasn’t officially greenlit the project, Mann confirmed he's deep in development and hopes to shoot in 2026. The sequel, based on Mann and Meg Gardiner’s 2022 novel, serves as both, a prequel and sequel to the original film. It explores the early lives of characters like Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) and Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), while continuing the story after the events of Heat. Mann is right now focused on securing the budget, currently negotiating with Warner Bros. Originally seeking $200 million, Mann has reportedly brought costs down to $170 million – still high for the studio, which may seek co-financing from Apple.
The biggest buzz? Leonardo DiCaprio has reportedly discussed starring in the film. While his role is unknown, insider rumours suggest he could play Otis Wardell, a new villain. If DiCaprio signs on, it could give the project the final push it needs.
Adam Driver, who worked with Mann on Ferrari, is also rumored to be in line to play a young McCauley, though Mann hasn’t confirmed casting.
