Appointed as the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board in January 2024, Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi continues to confront the challenges of international cricket both within Pakistan and abroad. Administratively, from captains to coaches, Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi is still going through a phase of experimentation in Pakistan cricket. His measures to improve the domestic cricket system in the country show gradual progress amid persistent issues. Having served as Chairman for 21 months, it would not be wrong to describe Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi’s tenure as eventful; yet, during this period, his actions and decisions on the global stage have effectively represented Pakistan cricket’s identity and stance.
Internally, the way Mohsin Naqvi handled player dominance and specific groupings within Pakistan cricket deserves immense praise. He also prevented the issue of coaches Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie stepping down from turning into a controversy. By reversing decisions related to the mentors’ program and the Champions League tournaments, he proved that his actions are not driven by ego but by a willingness to show flexibility for the betterment of cricket. Forming a selection committee without a chief selector and not including any player in the “A” category of the central contracts were among his notably unconventional decisions.
Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, who also holds the portfolio of Federal Interior Minister, continues to serve as the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board. Despite his extremely busy schedule, he has thus far represented Pakistan cricket’s case at the international level with remarkable competence. Even amid India’s dominance in the ICC, he succeeded in ensuring that Pakistan’s stance was heard and respected.
It would not be wrong to say that his introduction of the “fusion formula” regarding India’s refusal to play in Pakistan during the ICC Champions Trophy stating that if India does not come to Pakistan, then Pakistan will also not travel there was a genuine triumph. Moreover, as President of the Asian Cricket Council, the successful organization of the Asia Cup can be described as yet another significant achievement of Mohsin Naqvi.
After the Pakistan Vs India tensions during the Asia Cup extended from the border to the cricket field and Indian players and their captain refused to receive the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi the President of the Asian Cricket Council nonetheless emerged with dignity. Furthermore, following Afghanistan’s hostile behavior and its decision not to tour Pakistan, the PCB, under Mohsin Naqvi’s leadership, responded effectively by inviting Zimbabwe alongside Sri Lanka, ensuring that Pakistan’s cricketing journey continued without letting the issue turn into a controversy.
Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi has strongly challenged India’s dominance in world cricket, never allowing Pakistan’s importance or integrity to be compromised at any stage. This stance has proven deeply unsettling for the Indian media, which has repeatedly and unsuccessfully tried to portray him as a controversial figure. Now, there is speculation in India that the ICC meeting in November 2025 will be used to tighten the circle around Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi yet that, too, appears to be another illusion. So far, Mohsin Naqvi has played his cards with great skill, foiling Indian schemes at every turn. And now, another victory seems to be awaiting Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi at the upcoming ICC meeting.
