Universal Pictures is reviving The Mummy franchise, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz set to reunite for a brand-new sequel directed by the filmmaking duo, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.
The pair, best known for Ready or Not and the recent Scream installments, will helm the latest chapter in the beloved action-horror series. The upcoming project is not a reboot but a direct sequel that will ignore the events of the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
The original 1999 hit, directed by Stephen Sommers, grossed over $422 million worldwide, blending action, romance, and supernatural thrills in a 1920s Egyptian setting. Fraser starred as the swashbuckling adventurer Rick O'Connell, while Weisz played the fearless librarian Evelyn Carnahan.
Fraser's career resurgence following his Oscar-winning performance in The Whale reportedly reignited Universal's interest in bringing back The Mummy. He will next appear in Rental Family, while Weisz recently starred in Amazon's Dead Ringers and Marvel's Black Widow.
