Robert Redford honoured with emotional tribute at 2026 Sundance Film Festival Gala

The 2026 Sundance Film Festival paid a heartfelt tribute to its legendary founder Robert Redford at a gala event filled with stars, filmmakers, and heartfelt remembrances of his enduring impact on independent cinema. The festival – the first since Redford’s passing at age 89 – celebrated his vision, mentorship, and legacy as both a creative force and champion for emerging storytellers.

Attendees shared touching stories that highlighted Redford’s personal investment in nurturing new voices. A memorable moment came from actor Ethan Hawke, a long-time Sundance regular and beneficiary of Redford’s mentorship. Hawke recounted an early audition in front of Redford and shared how the founder’s encouragement shaped his career – ultimately pledging to “keep the fire that he started burning in ourselves” and share that passion with others.

The tribute also included a video segment met with thunderous applause and volunteers wearing buttons reading “Thank you Bob!” His 1969 independent film Downhill Racer was slated for a special screening during the festival, highlighting Redford’s own artistic beginnings and the roots of the institution he inspired.
