LAW, LITERATURE AND SPIRITUALITY CONVERGE AT SUPREME COURT REGISTRY

By Muhammad Ayaz Sheikh

The Supreme Court Registry Office in Karachi provided a dignified and reflective setting for an intellectually and spiritually resonant gathering as members of the legal fraternity, academics, writers, and cultural figures assembled for a prestigious book launch ceremony honoring the latest scholarly contributions of Arshad Mobin Ahmad, Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The occasion marked the formal unveiling of two new works by the author, Ilam kay Gaharey Samandar (The Deep Oceans of Knowledge) and Ilam kay Behtey Derya (The Flowing Rivers of Knowledge), both of which further his long-standing engagement with Islamic thought, ethics, and reflective scholarship alongside a distinguished legal career.

The ceremony assumed particular significance owing to the presence of eminent and widely respected figures from Pakistan’s legal community. The event was presided over by Khalid Javed, Senior Advocate Supreme Court and former President of the Sindh High Court Bar Association, and Muhammad Yasin Azad, a veteran leader of the Bar who has served as President of the Supreme Court Bar Association and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Pakistan Bar Council. In their remarks, both speakers paid warm tribute to the author, describing him as a rare example of a jurist who has successfully combined professional excellence with serious intellectual and religious inquiry. Khalid Javed observed that Mr. Mobin’s writings reflect depth, restraint, and sincerity, noting that such scholarly pursuits enrich the moral and intellectual foundations of the legal profession. Muhammad Yasin Azad, in his address, praised the clarity of thought and humility evident in the books, remarking that Mr. Mobin’s work revives the noble tradition of lawyers contributing meaningfully to society beyond the courtroom.

The gathering was further enriched by the presence of Dr. Umair Mahmood Siddiqui as Special Guest. A renowned Islamic scholar, Professor in the Department of Islamic Learning at the University of Karachi, and former member of the Council of Islamic Ideology, Dr. Siddiqui spoke at length on the importance of presenting religious knowledge with balance, humility, and intellectual honesty. Referring specifically to a chapter in the book addressing Palestine, he noted that the author highlights Palestine as the rightful homeland of its people and stresses the urgent need for the world to recognize their rights and end the ongoing oppression.

One of the most moving moments of the ceremony unfolded during a reverent segment when Mr. Arshad Mobin was presented with an immensely sacred piece of the Ghilaf-e-Kaaba, the Kiswah that adorns the Holy Kaaba. This sacred gift was presented by Mr. Salahuddin Sheikh, a close family friend of the author, who had served at Masjid al-Haram in Makkah for over three decades.

In his address, Mr. Arshad Mobin spoke with notable humility, describing Ilam kay Gaharey Samandar as his sixth book and emphasizing that no scholarly effort can ever claim finality or perfection. He explained that the book, like his earlier works, represents a sincere attempt rather than a claim to authority, and he invited readers to point out any shortcomings so that they might be addressed in future editions. He shared that the work had been dedicated to his family, expressing the hope that the light of knowledge would pass on to future generations and inspire them to continue this intellectual journey.

The author also expressed heartfelt gratitude to scholars and well-wishers who had guided him with constructive criticism over the years, particularly acknowledging Mufti Hafiz Qari Muhammad Husamullah Sharifi for meticulously reviewing his writings and issuing formal certifications that were included in the books. His remarks consistently reflected a commitment to intellectual accountability and deep respect for established scholarly tradition.

The ceremony was attended by a distinguished gathering, including Prof. Abdul Hameed Ansari, Kazi Abdul Hameed Siddiqui, Syed Zulfiqar Haider Shah, Masood Ausaf, Faiz Mahmood Khan Durrani, Arshad Khan Jadoon, Imran Arshad, and Kamran Arshad, along with other senior advocates. Beyond the legal community, the hall was graced by prominent social figures, poets, writers, and intellectuals, reflecting the broad cultural and scholarly appeal of the author’s work.

The proceedings were conducted by Jam Asif Mehmood Lar, Advocate Supreme Court and former member of the SCBA Executive Committee, who, as Stage Secretary, highlighted the rarity of maintaining a demanding legal practice while simultaneously producing serious and thoughtful religious literature.

In a gesture emblematic of generosity and openness, the author personally distributed copies of both newly launched books to the participants. The formal proceedings concluded with refreshments, offering attendees an opportunity for meaningful dialogue and exchange of ideas in an atmosphere marked by collegiality and mutual respect.
