A collective hope: Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy highlights importance of the Islamabad Talks

As tensions in the Middle East spiral following US strikes on Iran and the assasination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, singer Aima Baig has questioned the timing – and taste – of lighter celebrity news making the rounds online.
The comment came under a viral clip of Indian rapper Badshah speaking at a press conference at London’s O2 Arena, where he was asked about rumours surrounding actress Hania Aamir’s alleged wedding. In the video, he wished her well and said he hoped they could collaborate “when India-Pakistan’s ties improve, and when people’s sentiments allow,” adding that nothing is more important than one’s country and the sentiments of its people. Baig, however, wasn’t amused.
Taking to the comment section of the video, she wrote, “Looking and experiencing what’s happening in this world right now – and a huge tragedy just happened,” referring to the recent US attacks on Iran, “May ALLAH grant him the highest of all RIP, but do you think this news was worth posting?”
She went on to say that while she respects the outlet’s content and normally refrains from commenting online, the current moment called for a pause. “It’s the time of mourning. And posting about what a rapper said about what who where… seems disrespectful. Post something that will serve a purpose – sorry to say, but this news definitely does not.”
