The United Kingdom has joined a global push to regulate children’s digital habits, urging parents to strictly limit screen use among young children.

New guidance advises no screen exposure for children under two, and no more than one hour daily for those aged two to five. Experts warn that excessive use can disrupt sleep and replace essential activities like play and exercise.

The move reflects a wider international trend, with countries such as France, Denmark, and Netherlands tightening online safety rules. Indonesia has gone further, restricting access for under-16s to platforms like Roblox.

The UK guidance encourages screen-free routines at mealtimes and before bed, alongside parental supervision and age-appropriate content. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said parents need clear, practical support in managing children’s screen use. Authorities are also considering broader measures for older children, including social media age limits and tighter controls on digital platforms.
