The Sindh chapter of the Asma Jahangir Group has formally unveiled its candidates for the forthcoming Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan (SCBA) Elections for the 2026-27 term, signaling the beginning of an active campaign for one of the country’s most important representative bodies of lawyers.

The nominations were finalized during an important meeting of the group’s Core Committee held in Karachi. The session was chaired by veteran legal figure Muhammad Yaseen Azad, who currently heads the Sindh chapter of the group. According to participants, the committee held detailed consultations before unanimously approving the final panel for the Sindh seats.

For the office of Vice President (Sindh), the group has nominated senior advocate Jam Asif Mehmood Lar. For the two seats of Member Executive Committee, the nominees are Arshad Mobin Ahmed and Ejaz Ahmed Awan. The panel is being described by supporters as a combination of experience, professional credibility, and commitment to the legal community.

The Asma Jahangir Group has historically been regarded as one of the leading voices within Pakistan’s legal fraternity, particularly on issues relating to constitutional supremacy, judicial independence, civil liberties, and democratic continuity. The group said its newly nominated candidates represent those longstanding values and have consistently supported movements aimed at protecting the independence of institutions and strengthening the rule of law.

Observers within the legal community consider the upcoming SCBA elections significant, as the body plays a key role in representing lawyers at the national level and often takes positions on constitutional, judicial, and professional matters. The election is therefore expected to draw strong interest from bar associations and legal practitioners across Pakistan.

In addition to its constitutional stance, the group emphasized that welfare of advocates remains central to its agenda. It said the nominated panel would work for improved facilities for lawyers, stronger institutional support, enhanced professional development opportunities, and practical solutions to the everyday issues faced by advocates in courts across the country.

The nominations also received backing from several prominent legal personalities and senior members of the bar. Among those supporting the panel are Khalid Javaid, Kazi Abdul Hameed Siddiqi, Samia Faiz Durrani, Muhammad Aziz Khan, Dr. Shahnawaz Memon, Syed Zulfiqar Hyder Shah, Irfan Mir Halipota, along with several other senior advocates.

The group further stated that consultations were not limited to Karachi, as senior lawyers and regional representatives from different parts of Sindh remained in close digital coordination throughout the nomination process. This, according to organizers, reflected unity within the organization and broad-based support for the final panel.

In his concluding remarks, Muhammad Yasin Azad expressed full confidence in the nominated candidates and said they possessed the experience and determination required to serve the legal fraternity effectively. He reaffirmed that the group would continue to stand for democratic values within the bar, protect the dignity of the legal profession, and work for the rights and welfare of advocates across Pakistan.
