As the threat of massive US military action in Iran loomed closer and all hope for peace seemed lost, Pakistan pulled off a last-minute miracle by getting the warring parties to agree to a two-week ceasefire.
As Pakistanis celebrated the government’s successful mediation efforts and the world breathed a much-needed sigh of relief, Pakistani celebrities were also full of praise for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.
Mahira Khan said the news is huge. “Pakistanis around the world feeling proud. In a world where war [mongering] is rising, we chose peace and mediated it,” she wrote, calling for the peace to last. She ended her note on a hopeful “Pakistan Zindabad”.
Singer Farhan Saeed said the ceasefire was a “big relief” to the region, but also to the world at large, calling it the “biggest diplomatic win for Pakistan”. Actor Aijaz Aslam said Pakistanis stood “tall with pride” after their country had “carved out a monumental moment in history, bringing together the seemingly impossible”.
Celebrity dermatologist and TV host Shaista Lodhi said it was “encouraging” to see Iran and the US sit down to sort things out and called it a “relief”. She expressed gratitude to the prime minister and the armed forces, led by FM Munir, and prayed for the ceasefire to lead to “lasting peace in the region and beyond”.
