In a move that signals a tectonic shift for the Pakistani film industry, director Bilal Lashari announced that his magnum opus, 'The Legend of Maula Jatt', will officially hit theatres across China.
The release marks a watershed moment, as the blockbuster becomes the first Pakistani production to break into one of the most exclusive film markets and strict import quotas in the world.
China maintains a rigorous grip on the number of foreign films allowed on its screens annually. While Hollywood has long lobbied for the expansion of these quotas, 'The Legend of Maula Jatt' has managed to navigate the complex regulatory landscape to secure a wide release. Taking to X, Lashari described the achievement as "a new door opening for our stories on the world stage."
A reboot of the 1979 cult classic that defined the hyper-masculine "Gandasa" genre of Punjabi cinema, Lashari's vision originally premiered in October 2022. It quickly became a global phenomenon, shattering domestic box office records and earning critical acclaim for its high-octane action choreography and visual scale. The film follows the legendary rivalry between the hero Maula Jatt and the ruthless Noori Natt, played by Fawad Khan and Hamza Ali Abbasi, respectively.
