Sean Penn has revealed that he has sworn off selfies and large public gatherings, explaining that both have become overwhelming for him in recent years.

Speaking during a conversation with CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins at the 2026 Tribeca Festival in New York, the actor opened up about his growing discomfort with crowded events and the impact they have had on his mental wellbeing.

Penn explained that he has now committed to avoiding any gathering involving more than eight people. According to the actor, larger social settings trigger anxiety and leave him feeling uncomfortable.

“People should not do selfies ever with anyone. It’s bad for you, it’s bad for everyone. It’s a soul-sucker,” he said during the discussion. The actor then jokingly exaggerated his position by saying that even extraordinary circumstances would not change his mind, adding that selfie requests would still receive “a hard no”.

The actor also revealed that he skipped the recent Academy Awards despite winning Best Supporting Actor, choosing instead to travel to Ukraine. Penn has remained a vocal supporter of the country since Russia’s invasion and has made several visits in recent years. While in Ukraine, he watched the ceremony remotely and said he enjoyed the experience far more than attending in person.
