Embassy of Pakistan in Japan Hosts First Pakistan – Japan Symposium on Science, Technology and Innovation

Tokyo: In a significant initiative aimed at strengthening scientific and technological cooperation between Pakistan and Japan, the Embassy of Pakistan in Tokyo hosted the First Pakistan–Japan Symposium on Science, Technology and Innovation on Sunday. The landmark event brought together leading Pakistani researchers, scientists, technology professionals, and representatives from academia and industry residing in Japan to explore new opportunities for collaboration in emerging technologies and innovation.

Held under the theme, “Building Bridges Between Japanese Cutting-Edge Technologies and Pakistani Researchers, Scientists and Entrepreneurs,” the symposium highlighted the growing importance of science diplomacy and the vital role that research and innovation can play in enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries.

Opening the symposium, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Japan, Abdul Hameed, said that science and technology have become central pillars of modern diplomacy and economic development. He noted that Pakistan and Japan have enjoyed more than seven decades of cordial and friendly relations, but the future of this partnership should increasingly be driven by innovation, research cooperation, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing technologies.

The ambassador emphasized that Japan’s globally recognized expertise in robotics, biotechnology, advanced materials, and precision engineering offers tremendous opportunities for collaboration with Pakistan’s universities, research institutions, and emerging technology enterprises. He stressed the need for stronger academic partnerships, joint research initiatives, and industrial linkages to deepen bilateral cooperation and generate mutual economic benefits.

The symposium featured a series of presentations by distinguished Pakistani scientists and researchers working in Japan, covering a broad range of emerging technologies and scientific advancements with potential applications for Pakistan’s development.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. M. Ajmal Khan Wazir presented his pioneering work in photonic technologies. He explained how recent advances in photovoltaic materials and ultraviolet LED technologies could contribute to renewable energy production, healthcare, water purification, and climate resilience. Dr. Wazir highlighted the possibility of adapting these cutting-edge Japanese technologies to address Pakistan’s development challenges, particularly in the areas of energy security, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.

Addressing the symposium on agricultural innovation, Dr. Khurram Bashir discussed recent developments in plant science and chemical biology. He explained how scientific advancements in these fields can strengthen food security, improve agricultural sustainability, and help tackle micronutrient deficiencies affecting millions of people worldwide. He noted that scientific research and technology transfer could significantly enhance Pakistan’s agricultural productivity and contribute to achieving sustainable development goals.

The symposium also focused on renewable energy and climate solutions. Dr. Sana Ullah outlined the vast potential for cooperation between Pakistan and Japan in the field of clean energy technologies. He pointed out that Pakistan’s abundant solar resources, combined with Japanese expertise in advanced materials and catalysis, could pave the way for future collaboration in clean hydrogen technologies and sustainable energy systems.

Digital transformation and telecommunications emerged as another major theme of the symposium. Dr. Ahsan Sohail presented a case study on software-defined and artificial intelligence-enabled telecommunications infrastructure. He explained how these technologies could support Pakistan’s evolving telecom sector and facilitate the future deployment of fifth-generation, or 5G, communication technologies.

Artificial intelligence and language technologies also received considerable attention during the event. Dr. Iffat Maab proposed a collaborative framework for developing Urdu language technologies through data-driven research and innovation. She emphasized the need to create high-quality linguistic datasets and multilingual artificial intelligence systems capable of supporting education, healthcare, agriculture, and scientific communication.

Meanwhile, Mr. Haris Gulzar demonstrated the transformative potential of voice-based artificial intelligence and its applications across multiple sectors, including public services, education, and business.

Throughout the symposium, participants engaged in lively discussions on technology commercialization, startup ecosystems, research funding, university-industry partnerships, and talent mobility. The event also highlighted the important role played by the Pakistani scientific diaspora in Japan in promoting bilateral cooperation and facilitating the exchange of knowledge, technology, and expertise between the two countries.

In his closing remarks, Ambassador Abdul Hameed thanked the distinguished speakers and participants for contributing to the success of the inaugural symposium and reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to promoting innovation, scientific cooperation, and sustainable economic development.

The symposium concluded with a networking dinner and follow-up discussions aimed at identifying future collaborative projects and strengthening professional ties between Pakistani and Japanese researchers, scientists, and entrepreneurs.
