The number of social media users worldwide has reached 5.66 billion in 2025, highlighting the rapid growth of digital connectivity and online communication. According to the latest Digital 2025 Global Overview Report, social media now plays a central role in communication, entertainment, education, business, and digital marketing across the globe.
The report states that social media users account for 68% of the world's population, up significantly from 2.27 billion users in 2015. On average, people spend 2 hours and 36 minutes per day across nearly 39 different social media platforms, reflecting the increasing influence of digital platforms on everyday life.
Among the world's leading platforms, Facebook remains the largest, with approximately 3.07 billion monthly active users, followed by YouTube with 2.58 billion and Instagram with nearly 2 billion users. These platforms continue to dominate global digital engagement, content creation, and online advertising.
The report also highlights regional adoption trends. Eastern Asia records the highest social media penetration at 88.1%, followed by Northern Europe (79%), Western Europe (77.7%), and North America (74%). Social media usage remains lower in parts of Africa, with Eastern Africa (12.1%), Central Africa (12.6%), and Western Africa (19%) reporting the lowest adoption rates.
Experts continue to emphasize the importance of responsible social media use, particularly among children and teenagers, as governments worldwide strengthen online safety regulations, digital privacy laws, and child protection policies to promote a safer digital environment.
