Pakistan appears to be entering an important political and diplomatic moment. Three recent developments point toward a broader shift: growing defence cooperation between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye; renewed political strength for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in Azad Jammu and Kashmir; and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s increasing emphasis on ministerial performance.

Individually, these developments are significant. Together, they suggest that Pakistan’s regional importance is growing while the political position of the Shehbaz Sharif government appears stronger than many critics had expected.

A Strategic Triangle with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye
The most significant development is the emerging defence cooperation among Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. These three countries bring different but complementary strengths.

Pakistan is the Muslim world’s only declared nuclear weapons state and has one of its largest and most experienced armed forces. Saudi Arabia is a major economic, diplomatic and strategic power, while Türkiye has developed into an important defence producer with advanced indigenous military technology.

Closer cooperation could therefore create a strategic partnership extending from South Asia to the Gulf and eastern Mediterranean. Such an alignment would attract attention from major regional and global powers.

For Pakistan, deeper defence relations could strengthen strategic deterrence and reduce the possibility of diplomatic isolation. Modern national security depends not only on military hardware but also on alliances, economic relationships, technology and diplomatic support.

Technology cooperation represents another major opportunity. Türkiye has made significant advances in unmanned aerial systems, missiles, naval platforms and electronic warfare, while Pakistan has decades of experience in aviation, missile development, defence manufacturing and military training. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, has the financial capacity and ambition to expand its own defence industry.

Combining Turkish technology, Pakistani expertise and Saudi investment could create opportunities for joint defence production, research and development. Instead of simply purchasing weapons, Pakistan should focus on technology transfer, local manufacturing and joint ventures capable of serving international markets.

Defence Exports and Economic Opportunity
Pakistan’s defence industry already produces aircraft, armoured vehicles, ammunition and other military equipment, but its export potential remains considerable.

Partnerships with Türkiye and Saudi Arabia could provide investment, technology and access to new markets across Asia, the Middle East and Africa. For an economy that has repeatedly faced foreign-exchange challenges, high-value exports can play an important role in strengthening economic stability.

However, the real success of strategic cooperation should not be measured only by military agreements. It should also produce investment, employment, technology transfer, energy cooperation, industrial development and increased trade.

A strategic partnership becomes meaningful for ordinary Pakistanis when it improves economic opportunities and living standards.

PML-N’s Renewed Political Confidence
At home, the PML-N’s performance in Azad Jammu and Kashmir has challenged the narrative that the party has permanently lost its political strength.

Elections remain the ultimate test of political popularity. Social media trends, television debates and public rallies can influence perceptions, but voters ultimately determine electoral outcomes.

The result has provided the PML-N with renewed confidence and strengthened the argument that it retains an electoral base despite recent political and economic challenges. Combined with developments in foreign policy and defence cooperation, it gives the Shehbaz Sharif government a stronger narrative of stability.

Performance Must Define Government
For Shehbaz Sharif, however, political stability should lead to better governance rather than political complacency. His emphasis on ministerial performance could become one of the most important tests of his government.

Pakistan has often developed a political culture in which becoming a minister is treated as an achievement, while measurable performance receives less attention. If ministers are given clear targets, regularly evaluated and replaced when they fail, the government could improve its credibility significantly.

Citizens judge governments not by cabinet photographs but by electricity bills, employment, food prices, roads, hospitals, schools, policing and the quality of public services.

Performance is the most durable political campaign.
A Challenge for Political Opponents
The reaction of the Pakistan Peoples Party and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to electoral setbacks in Azad Kashmir also deserves attention. Political parties have every right to question election results where credible evidence of irregularities exists. However, serious allegations must ultimately be supported by evidence and pursued through appropriate democratic and legal institutions.

For Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who represents a younger generation of national leadership, accepting electoral setbacks, understanding voters’ choices and developing a stronger political proposition will be crucial. Remaining focused on allegations could prevent the PPP from addressing the reasons behind its electoral performance.
Congratulations, Pakistan, on another moment of respect.
