Scientists have developed an ultra-black coating capable of absorbing 99.9% of visible light, making it one of the darkest materials ever created. The breakthrough has the potential to transform industries ranging from space exploration and advanced optics to scientific imaging and high-precision sensors.
According to researchers, the newly engineered coating appears almost completely black because it captures nearly all incoming light instead of reflecting it. Scientists at the University of California, Santa Barbara report that this innovative material absorbs significantly more light than previous ultra-black coatings.
The coating was created using carbon-based nanotechnology, allowing light to become trapped within its microscopic structure. As a result, virtually no light escapes, producing an exceptionally dark surface with minimal reflection.
Experts believe the technology could improve the performance of space telescopes, astronomical instruments, laser systems, high-resolution cameras, and next-generation optical devices by reducing unwanted glare and enhancing image accuracy. The innovation may also support future advancements in aerospace engineering, photonics, and scientific research.
