Shuja Asad embraces the underdog

Actor Shuja Asad may be enjoying a string of successful projects, but he says he is in no hurry to shed his underdog status. With performances in Khaie, Tann Mann Neelo Neel, Ae Ishq-i-Junoon and Dr Bahu, the actor has built a reputation for taking on complex, flawed characters rather than playing it safe.

Speaking about his growing popularity, Shuja admits that fame can be difficult to navigate. “I don’t mind being an underdog,” he says. “I want that dark horse energy. No controversy, just good projects.”

The actor is equally candid about the pressures of social media and public scrutiny, revealing that he has repeatedly asked his manager to let him delete Instagram. “I want people to meet Salman from Dr Bahu, or Shehroz from AIIJ, or Barlas from Khaie, before they meet me.”

For Shuja, the focus remains firmly on the craft. “I’m a storyteller. That’s my job,” he asserts, as he continues to train, experiment and seek roles that push him beyond expectations.
