Washington: US aerospace and defense technology company Shield AI has unveiled the X-BAT, an advanced autonomous combat aircraft designed to perform vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) without a conventional runway. The development marks a significant step forward in AI-powered military aviation and autonomous defense technology.
According to reports, the X-BAT is designed to operate from roads, fields and other limited spaces, offering greater flexibility for military missions. The aircraft is approximately 26 feet long and 39 feet wide and is designed to carry different types of missiles and bombs.
The autonomous aircraft also incorporates advanced technologies and specialized materials intended to reduce its radar visibility, enhancing survivability in contested environments. Its powerful propulsion system is designed to support high-speed flight and a range of military missions.
The X-BAT is being positioned as a potential solution for modern warfare, where runway-independent operations, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and rapid deployment are becoming increasingly important. Its vertical takeoff and landing capability could allow military forces to operate from locations where traditional fighter aircraft cannot.
The development highlights the growing role of AI in defense, autonomous combat aircraft, next-generation military technology and unmanned aerial systems. If successfully deployed, platforms such as the X-BAT could significantly reshape future air operations and expand the capabilities of modern armed forces.
