Amazon: Rekognition software can detect fear

TECH NEWS

Nothing says ‘nightmare scenario’ quite like a giant tech corporation everyone uses knowing what you're feeling.

Amazon announced that Rekognition, its controversial facial recognition tool, can now detect a person's fear. The update includes "improved accuracy for emotion detection (for all 7 emotions: ‘Happy’, ‘Sad’, ‘Angry’, ‘Surprised’, ‘Disgusted’, ‘Calm’ and ‘Confused’)" but, just for kicks, “added a new emotion: ‘Fear’.” Amazon claimed the results were "misinterpreted" and that, actually, a 95 percent success rate is good for this software, which is primarily to be used for helping to narrow options down, not necessarily to provide perfect accuracy.

Samsung to launch long battery life laptop

At the Samsung's Note 10 launch event, the company also unveiled its newest laptop: the Galaxy Book S, an LTE-enabled laptop with a whopping 23-hour battery life priced at $999. It will go on sale in ‘select markets’ later this year. During the event, Samsung described the laptop as having the ‘essence of a smartphone.’ The 13-inch laptop is meant to be "always-on" with gigabit LTE capabilities and weighs just over two pounds. It comes with 8GB of RAM and will be available with 256GB or 512GB of storage. To that end, it will also include a microSD slot for additional storage. But the most impressive spec by far is its battery life. The Galaxy Book S battery will get almost a full day of use, according to the company. Whether the Galaxy Book S is as impressive as Samsung makes it out to be is still unclear. Last year's Galaxy Book2 also boasted an impressive battery life and Qualcomm processor, but was criticised by reviewers for lacklustre performance.
