ASK A NUTRITIONIST

I cannot manage much time for physical exercise and I have a full-time desk job. Is there an exercise routine I could do before bed or early morning before work?

Get yourself a set of dumbbells and look up a 30 minute workout on YouTube that’s a combination of some resistance training and cardio and is one that you enjoy. Timing is irrelevant and you can do it whenever you get time.

Do calcium supplements interfere with medications? Shall I take a break from my supplements?

Calcium supplements can interfere with a lot of medications including some antibiotics, osteoporosis medications, diuretics, hormone therapy and blood pressure medications. It’s always best to ask your doctor about drug interactions before starting any new medication.

I just started doing a high-intensity workout since two weeks and my aim is to build on muscle mass. Please suggest a diet plan accordingly.

To gain muscle you need to be in a caloric surplus and do some kind of resistance training to work your muscles. While high intensity workouts and cardio are great for your heart and a vital part of an exercise regime, strength training is vital if you’re looking to put on muscle. For your diet, make sure to get enough protein and have a balanced diet with sufficient portions of carbs and fats to fuel your training as well. Eat slightly above your maintenance calories to gain muscle.

Can I still take vitamins if I am involved with a detoxification program?

Yes, you can but you should try to get sufficient nutrients through your diet by eating whole foods.

I am 24 years old and overweight. Thinking of starting keto to shed some pounds. What should I know about keto?

You don’t need to go on keto to shed pounds. Losing weight is all about a caloric deficit but if keto is something you enjoy and you can adhere to, go for it. Keto is a very low-carb, moderate-protein and high-fat diet. It typically contains 75% fat, 20% protein and only 5% carbs.
