The nominations for 92nd Academy Awards were announced recently. Todd Phillips’ Joker, a comic-book origin story about Batman’s biggest foe, scored a leading 11 Oscar nominations. Martin Scorsese’s mob epic The Irishman, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and 1917 followed close behind with 10 nods a piece. Those films, along with Ford v Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Marriage Story and Parasite will compete for best picture. Despite efforts in recent years to diversify the Academy's membership, women were shut out of the best director category completely. Along with Phillips, the nominees for best director include Scorsese, Sam Mendes, Tarantino and Bong Joon Ho. Antonio Banderas, Leonardo DiCaprio, Adam Driver, Joaquin Phoenix, Jonathan Pryce will be competing for lead actor. While, Cynthia Erivo, Scarlett Johansson, Saoirse Ronan, Charlize Theron and Renee Zellweger are nominated for the lead actress category. The nominees for supporting actor include Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci and Brad Pitt. And Kathy Bates, Laura Dern, Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh and Margot Robbie are nominated for best supporting actress. The awards will air live on 9th February 2020.
