According to police, a 57-year-old truck driver was detained after loads of potatoes were discovered spilled on a crucial bridge connecting two Danish islands. The driver was detained on suspicion of putting lives in danger recklessly. At 6:35 a.m. (04:35 GMT), a first spill was reported on the Storebaelt bridge's westbound side, according to police spokesman Kenneth Taanquist. Denmark's mainland is connected to the island where the capital, Copenhagen, is located by a bridge. A short while later, Tanquist continued, a comparable incident occurred on the eastbound side. ”It looks weird,” he said. “We are working on two hypotheses: it is either an accident or it is something that has been done deliberately.” Police warned motorists to drive carefully because the roads had become slick. Lines of traffic were observed on either side of the roughly 18-kilometre (11.2-mile) bridge and tunnel that connects the islands of Funen, where Copenhagen is situated, and Funen, which is home to Odense, Denmark's third-largest city. Near the Jutland peninsula town of Kolding, a third instance of potatoes on the road was reported. The potato spills happened on the same day that the Danish parliament approved a law taxing diesel trucks that carry heavy loads, according to Danish public broadcaster.
