In an unexpected visit that stunned many and sparked concerns about the succession plan, the estranged second son of Thailand's monarch made his first trip back to Bangkok in almost three decades. Videos showing Vacharaesorn Vivacharawongse touring locations in the capital and making what appeared to be a low-key arrival at Suvarnabhumi airport on Sunday were widely circulated on social media. His arrival comes at a challenging moment for the Thai royal family as the eldest daughter of King Maha Vajiralongkorn has been in the hospital since collapsing in December. The palace reported in January that Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendira Debyavat had suffered from a serious heart arrhythmia brought on by inflammation following a health condition. He told the media on Tuesday that he had received a warm welcome from everyone. “I have been away for a long time, 27 years. It’s a dream come true that I have returned. When I looked out of the window before landing, I was delighted,” he said. “Even though I have been abroad for a long time, I have never once forgotten that I am a Thai person. I have never forgotten how important our culture is.” The palace has not commented on his arrival.
