Punjab Censor Board halts the release of film ‘Javed Iqbal’

Movies are a massive value creator. Even a country like Pakistan, whose film industry has only started expanding, is taking bold steps to grow creative output. The coronavirus pandemic has already upended the content pipeline, halting film production and closing cinemas. Making it worst are the censor boards. The film Javed Iqbal: The Untold Story of a Serial Killer was scheduled for a nationwide release on January 28. While it was cleared by the censor boards and had a Karachi premiere, the Punjab Censor Board decided to halt its release and send it for review. Following the notice, the leading cast of the film shared their disappointment over the censorship. Yasir Hussain who plays the serial killer in the movie, while showing his displeasure over the news, questioned that if ever the independent filmmakers will get a chance in this country. While Ayesha Omar who plays the role of a police officer, wrote, “This is so sad. The film had been passed by all censor boards including Punjab and only then was the release date announced. But right after the Karachi premiere, two days before the release of the film, the Punjab Government decided to halt the release and review it again.” Javed Iqbal revolves around the real life events of a serial killer who physically abused and killed more than 100 children in Lahore. The film’s release has said to have halted due to objection from the public.
